Piled Higher and Deeper in Venice Beach

I love the insanity of this camper. So much stuff they had to bring along a mini-van to hold the extra. I have no idea what the story is behind this is, but that festive banner flying on the main camper tells me this is a fun crowd not some down and out of luck scenario.

The image was shot purposefully with HDR file generation in mind by bracketing the exposures 2 stops +/- from average. The HDR file generation was completed with the help of Adobe's CS5 that I also used for the tone mapping. Tone mapped for max saturation and definition between the various shapes so it took on a lot of blocks of color emphasizing the surreal nature of the setting itself.

IT will be in the satchel of goodies for you to peruse at this coming Thursday (10/14) Artists Reception at Bolt Barber's in Los Angeles. For those that forgot the details it is set for 7-9:30PM at Bolt Barbers, 460 S Spring Street (5th and Spring) Los Angeles CA.

One more for the show....

Dang it all. Both printers decided to die on me in the middle of yesterdays effort to get some oldies but goodies added back to the satchel for the October 14, 2010 Bolt Barbers' Gallery reception. Alas the 'puter and art gawds aren't playing well together.

Before it died I did get one last print done. Always loved the haunting look of this image...

Real Toy Camera...

I had a toy camera called the Che-ez Snap. It was tiny, hardly bigger than a postage stamp. Its optics was fixed focus, with the edges being really sketchy. Color was off and over saturated. Contrast was off as well...on the contrasty side rather than flat so I liked the results, most of the time. It was all of .2, yes POINT 2 mega pixels and I loved its low Res images to pieces.

These are a few select few that are being printed up for inclusion in my goodies satchel for things to dig through (and purchase if so inclined) at my Artists Reception at Bolt Barbers' Gallery on October 14, 2010. (Details in a prior post).

Open invitation to my Artists Reception 10/14/2010

Mark your calenders, October 14, 2010, 7PM to 9:30PM for my artists reception at Bolt Barbers in Los Angeles. The addy...460 S Spring Street (corner of 5th and Spring) Los Angeles CA. The reception will include a hosted "Candy bar"...perfect to kick off Halloween. There is no need to RSVP as this is open to the public.

It will be held in conjunction with the Downtown LA Art Walk that runs 5-10PM on that day. Be prepared for tight parking. The Hotel Alexandria at 501 S Spring Street has underground valet parking and you can buy discounted parking from the Bolt good at the hotel. Worth every penny to avoid the other more known public lots in the area.

As soon as Bolt has their artists page updated.

The curator of the exhibit, Betsy Matz designed the post cards and chose one of my favorite images to use on the card. "Abandoned Church, Paris" is one of my favorites for many reasons. Chief of which is that its proof that the greatest rewards are when we stray from the beaten path.

We were on a walking tour of the old Jewish quarter when the guide had us change directions and pointed out there was "nothing to see" down this one small street as the church there was being gutted to turn into retail shops etc.,. Fine I kept walking. We rounded a couple more corners and he pointed out again "nothing to see...." and gave the same reason pointing down the general direction we had been. I broke ranks and jogged down the half block and look what I found, this terrific old church, built in the 1500's being gutted. What a wonderful patina to the walls, the rough hewn beams and on the other side of the wall, the church's old courtyard in full spring bloom with Victorian era apartments on the other side.

I had the camera set in seconds for bracketed exposures and shot it with HDR post processing in mind. I used Photomatix for the post processing in to the HDR file and kept it adjusted for photo-realism with maximum detail in the shadows to highlights. Had I not used HDR file generation I would have had either a beautifully exposed courtyard with a blacked out church, or church detail with blown out highlights for the courtyard. Classic win/win that you can get with HDR and keeping it real instead of surreal.

See you at the reception!

"Soy" for 2/25/10

In spanish I'm told it translates roughly into single person or in this case the single tagger not a team?

In other news Ceramic Artist Heather Shaw and myself are teaming up to host an artists reception. One with a twist...both of us will be there with paint brush in hand on one canvas. This should be interesting as though both love impressionists and paint in that style she's an up close and personal still life kinda gal and am more of a broad stroke landscapist. Regardless, the final result will be up for silent auction bid with the proceeds going to the Monrovia Association of Fine Artists and all the work they do supporting the arts in the area.

Mark you calender for the evening of March 6, 2010. It will be held at the Paint n Play 2 Art Studio and Gallery at 418 S Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia, CA 91016. Time is 6:30-9PM.

Gallery Showing through 6/30/09

My run at California Wine and Cheese continues. To keep it all fresh I swapped in a couple of new pictures. Both you've seen here already but at least one is worth repeating just because I like it.

Artist Meet and Greet Reception is set for 6/19/2009 5:30PM - 8:30PM. Of course since this is at California Wine and Cheese there will be specially priced "Artist Red" and "Artist White" for the event. IF you are really adventurous and want to learn about wine and wine tasting purchase one of their flights and let the staff teach you all about wine appreciation.

California Wine and Cheese is located at 115 W Foothill Blvd, Monrovia CA 91016

Title inspiration from the strangest places

The video from YouTube is what gave me the idea for the title, a little explanation after the vid.

Note the image above, its part of the "Duck and Cover" series that I will be installing 1/3/09 at the Focus One Gallery here in Monrovia.

I wrote about this image and a few others in the series a while back.  I accidentally started a series of HDR photos of dioramas that I worked into very surreal images almost refreezing the moment.  Shooting it I knew that the spots and floods used were all different colors of light which I used to move it further into the unnatural.  I did that by exaggerating the color shifts.  They may have started as a photograph but the quickly morphed into something other than a simple recording of a scene.

There was a quality to the images that I wound up exaggerating that reminded me of the pictures of the A-bomb tests from the Cold War era.  I have to admit I struggled with what to call the series.

At the risk of severely dating myself there was event in particular that struck a note in me when I was in Kindergarten.  It was the Cuban Missile Crisis.  I don't remember much of the details but I remember being in South Dakota at the time visiting my great-grandmother.  My Mom's cousin whom we stayed with and all the adults were glued to Walter Cronkite and the TV and worried aloud what it all meant.  Thankfully history records well how it ended.

In the weeks after that I have memories of being told about "the bomb" and how to "Duck and Cover" to save ourselves in the event the bomb came.  (Reality check, in the UP of MI at the time we were well outside of striking range, and if we were hit we'd be a glowing ash regardless if we did the duck and cover or not).  Many years later I watched the film "Atomic Cafe".  Watching that film I remembered that video from my childhood.

I did a quick little YouTube search and found the video that matches a sound track I had found a while back.

Duck and Cover the series will be 4 images.  They will be framed and matted artists proofs, done as if on old fashioned deckle edged glossy photo paper, just like you would have found the pictures done up in your granny's photo album back in the day.

Once opening reception details are ironed out, I'll post here and you all will be invited.

Route 66 Art Gallery Grand Opening this weekend

The Aztec Hotel and MAFA have a new joint venture going. This is going to be a gallery that doesn't have white walls. It will be a gallery without a stuffy 'tude. It will be a gallery with a huge reference library on art for anyone one that wants to take some time to learn art history, art technique or just sit and ponder what an artist is capable of. Of course, it will all be available for purchase should you find the piece that strikes a cord deep within your soul.

The Route 66 Gallery can't be missed. It is right at the corner of Foothill Blvd and N. Magnolia in the historic Aztec Hotel here in Monrovia.
From the official press release:
All MAFA members are invited to attend the Grand Opening of our latest Art Gallery, Route 66 Gallery located at 301 West Foothill Blvd on Saturday July 12th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Our first exhibition will be “California in Bloom.” In addition to oils and watercolors, our display will also include photographs, sculptures and ceramics.

Light refreshments will be served, accompanied by live entertainment
I'll have several old favorites and new images at the show. Among them is "English Rose Bud" which was taken in my garden. It is the English Rose "Pat Austin". I shot it RAW, then worked it in the orton style while keeping some detail within the image. When done I ran it through Virtual Photographer giving it at bit more contrast and saturation like one would find on a Cibachrome print. (I still refuse to call it ilfochrome which is the name given after purchase by the ilford people). The final image is 8X12 matted and framed ready to go to a nice home!

Just a little sampling of what I have on show at the California Wine and Cheese shop here in Monrovia. The piece is a watercolor photograph titled "Pietra Blanca Lighthouse".

The artist "Meet and Greet" will take place Friday August 24, 2007, 5:30PM - 8:30PM. Tell the owner Tom Duggan or his bartender that you are there for the art and they will have available a specially priced Red or White wine for you.

California Wine and Cheese is a new business here in Monrovia that fills a gap missing in adult oriented evenings out since the Wine of the Month Club closed down its tasting room. They specialize in as the name implies the unique wine and cheeses of California. It's quite the deal, they have "flights" of usually 4-6 wines from a particular, grape, region or vintner available for purchase. Tom and his staff tell you about the wine, what makes it special and how to detect the difference. And to satisfy the tummy as well as the pallet they offer up cheese platters tailored to your "flight" so you learn about that kind of paring. It makes for a terrific night now...now if we can get them to come up with a dessert offering to finish the flight it would be perfect.

Apologies for the lack of new stuff to entertain but the last couple of weeks have been murder around here between weather and migraine triggers.
